Super Fun and Easy Kids Experiment – Walking Water

Today we tried the walking water experiment. We first saw this experiment on the WhizKidScience channel, which you should check out.

To do this experiment, you’ll need:

  • clear plastic cups
  • paper towels
  • food coloring
  • water

Here’s how to do it:

On the odd cups (1, 3, 5 etc) put alternating food coloring and water. Fill the cup about 3/4 to the top. Here’s how we set ours up:

Pink | Empty | Yellow | Empty | Blue | Empty | Pink

Once you’ve mixed the food coloring and the water, your next step is to add the paper towels.

For full sheets of paper towel, cut them in half, then fold them until you have then strips, then fold them as “tents”, then place one end in the full cup, and the other end in the empty cup. Repeat until you’ve created “bridges” between all cups.

Now wait.

After about a half-hour your water will “walk” from the full cups to the empty, and combine the colors.

This was a super fun experiment and is appropriate for any age level. Just don’t stain your clothes 😉
